Environmental Authorisation application process for the Sibella Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near Bloemfontein in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality (MMM), Free State Province

Final Basic Assessment Report (FBAR) submitted to the Competent Authority

K2023230308 (South Africa) Pty Ltd, has appointed the Jones & Wagener (Pty) Ltd Engineering & Environmental Consultants (J&W) as the independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) to undertake the relevant EA application process for the proposed Sibella Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near Bloemfontein within Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality (MMM) in the Free State Province.

The project entails the development of a BESS and associated grid infrastructure on Portion 2 of the Farm Picton 2264 approximately 8.8 kilometres northwest of Bloemfontein located within the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality (MMM). The Sibella BESS will have a development area of approximately seven (7) hectares and a planned capacity of 123 Megawatts (MW) / 492 Megawatts Hour (MWh). The Applicant will submit a bid under the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP) or similar procurement programme.

The Final Basic Assessment Report (FBAR) has been submitted to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE) on  22 August 2024.
