Water Use Licence Amendment for Sasol South Africa (Pty) Ltd: Changes to the discharge volumes of the Sasol One and Sasol Midland discharge points at the Sasolburg and Ekandustria Operations, Free State

NOTICE FOR AVAILABILITY OF THE CONSULTATION WULA SUMMARY REPORT AND SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS FOR PUBLIC REVIEW FROM 30 JUNE TO 30 AUGUST 2023

Sasol South Africa is applying for an amendment of a Water Use Licence (WUL) in terms of changes proposed to the discharge volumes of the Sasol One and Sasol Midland discharge points at the Sasolburg and Ekandustria Operations, Metsimaholo Local Municipality in the Free State Province.

Sasol holds a WUL issued in 2016 (License No. 14/C22K/FG/4958 – amended in 2019 and 2022) that stipulates the annual authorised water discharge volumes and daily discharge water qualities for the Sasol One and Sasol Midland discharge points. As a result of changes to rainfall patterns in the region, during high rainfall events, Sasol cannot maintain discharge below the volume as stipulated in the WUL. Sasol is applying for an amendment of the discharge volumes, as follows:

  • Sasol One: From 16 060 000 to 18 250 000 m3/annum
  • Sasol Midland: From 2 701 000 to 3 927 000 m3/annum

The Sasol One discharge point is located on Portion 8, of Farm Herewaarde 409.

The Sasol Midland discharge point is located on Portion 1 of Farm Coalplex 1818.

It is proposed that the water use as described in Section 21 (f) of the National Water Act (NWA), Act 36 of 1998 (as amended) is amended. The Competent Authority for this application is the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).

The Draft WULA Summary Report and supporting documents will be available for public review from 30 June to 30 August 2023. You are welcome to access copies of the documents at the direct links below or at the Metsimaholo Local Municipality library in Sasolburg.
