Environmental Authorisation application process for the Anemoi Wind Energy Facility and associated grid connection infrastructure, near Ermelo in the Msukaligwa Local Municipality, Mpumalanga

Acceptance of Final Scoping Report

We would like to notify you of the acceptance of the Scoping Report and the Plan of Study for Environmental Impact Assessment process for the proposed Anemoi Wind Energy Facility (WEF) and associated grid connection infrastructure, near Ermelo in Mpumalanga.

South Africa Mainstream Renewable Power Developments (Pty) Ltd (Mainstream) is proposing to develop the Anemoi Wind Energy Facility (WEF) and associated grid connection infrastructure on land approximately 11km west of the town Ermelo in the Msukaligwa Local Municipality and the greater Gert Sibande District Municipality in the Mpumalanga Province.

The development is proposed on the following properties:

  • Farm Rietvlei No. 433 (Portions 1,4,6,8,11,15)
  • Portion 1 of Farm Middelplaat No.271
  • Farm De Roodepoort No. 435 (Portions 2,3,8 & RE)

The proposed Anemoi WEF is being developed with the aim of generating renewable energy to supply to the national grid under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) or similar procurement programme. The WEF will connect to an Onsite Substation and 132 kV powerlines will evacuate power from the WEF to the 132 kV/400 kV Anemoi Main Transmission Substation (MTS), which will integrate into the national by grid by connecting to either the Camden-Komati 275kV or Camden-Duvha 400kV power lines. Two (2) alternative MTS locations are being considered. The grid connection infrastructure and MTS will be ceded to Eskom once constructed. The total export capacity of the WEF will be up to 140 MWac.

The acceptance letter (link provided below) from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE), the competent authority for the project, provides three reference numbers and refers to the different infrastructure components which include a) Anemoi Wind Energy Facility (WEF) (DFFE Ref: 14/12/16/3/3/2/2721/1) , b) Main Transmission Substation (MTS) (DFFE Ref: 14/12/16/3/3/2/2721/2), and c) associated electrical grid connection infrastructure (EGI) (DFFE Ref: 14/12/16/3/3/2/2721/3). The reference numbers 14/12/16/3/3/2/2721/1, 14/12/16/3/3/2/2721/2 and 14/12/16/3/3/2/2721/3 can be used for enquiries at the DFFE and is proof of registration of the application at the competent authority.

With the acceptance letter in hand, specialist studies may now be concluded, and it will culminate in the compilation of a Consultation Environmental Impact Report (CEIR) which will be made available to stakeholders for their review and comments.
