Registration in terms of the Norm for the Exclusion of Identified Activities Associated with the Development and Expansion of Battery Storage Facilities in Areas of Low or Medium Environmental Sensitivity

Notice is hereby given in terms of Government Notice (GN) 4557 of 27 March 2024 of a registration in terms of the Battery Storage Exclusion Norm and Exclusion of Identified Activities Associated with the Development and Expansion of Battery Storage Facilities from the Requirement to Obtain an Environmental Authorisation.

K2022579146 (South Africa) Pty Ltd, the Applicant, is applying for Registration in terms of the “Norm for the Exclusion of Identified Activities Associated with the Development and Expansion of Battery Storage Facilities in Areas of Low or Medium Environmental Sensitivity” for the proposed Acamas Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near Virginia in the Free State Province.

Jones & Wagener (Pty) Ltd Engineering & Environmental Consultants (J&W) has been appointed as an independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) to undertake the registration process for the proposed Acamas BESS project.

The project entails the development of a BESS and associated gridline infrastructure on Portion 3 of the Farm Hakkies 695 approximately 7.9 kilometres southwest of Virginia located within the Matjhabeng Local Municipality (MLM). The Acamas BESS will have a development area of approximately 9.81 hectares and a planned capacity of 124MWac. The Applicant will submit a bid under the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP) or similar procurement programme.

The Registration Application will be submitted to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE), the Competent Authority.

The Site Sensitivity Verification Report and Environmental Management Programme will be available for Public Comment from 4 July 2024 to 5 August 2024
