Project Showcase: R21 Sinkhole Remediation
01/10/2025
One of Jones and Wagener’s strengths is our deep understanding and appreciation of challenging geological conditions, like dolomite. What better project to showcase this expertise than our recent work on the R21 sinkhole remediation?
J&W had the immense privilege and honour of working on the R21 section 2 (km 3.2) sinkhole remediation project. This project exemplified the symbiotic relationship between engineers and geologists. After a detailed investigation and design phase, the next phase of the sinkhole remediation involved stabilising two major sinkholes on the shoulder of the highway, using grout bags and soilcrete to plug the sinkholes, followed by backfilling and compaction. This was followed by the use of compaction grouting in a grid pattern under existing powerlines, to improve the surrounding high-risk area which was characterised by extremely poor dolomitic conditions. This innovative approach was designed to ensure the long-term stability of the highway with minimal disruption to the public.
Special thanks to SANRAL, Raubex Group Ltd Esor JV, and our dedicated on-site team, who took on the challenge not only of addressing the sinkholes but also overcoming their fear of heights. Safely harnessed, our team utilized a cherry picker to carry out the crucial inspections ahead of the remediation work.
