Dr Pierre van der Berg
CEO
Pierre van der Berg graduated at the University of Pretoria with a B Eng (Civil) Cum Laude in 1988. He started working in the Geotechnical section of the then Van Wyk & Louw Inc (now Zutari) in 1994. He completed his B Eng Honours (Civil) at the University of Pretoria in 1992 and continued to complete his M Eng (with distinction) at the University of Pretoria in 1994.
Pierre joined Jones & Wagener in 1994 as a geotechnical engineer and was involved on numerous geotechnical investigations, but also gained experience with the design of mining related infrastructure and tailings dams. In 1996, Pierre and his wife moved to Guildford (England) to study further in Geotechnical Engineer. He obtained his PhD at the University of Surrey in 1999. The title of his thesis was “Measurement and prediction of ground movements around three NATM tunnels”.
Pierre returned to Jones & Wagener in 1999 and continued working as a geotechnical engineer. Pierre was promoted to Associate and then to Director in 2004. In 2014 he was appointed as the CEO of Jones & Wagener, a responsibility which he is continuing to fulfill to date.
Pierre’s involvement in mining infrastructure related projects includes bulk earthworks, haul roads and dragline walkways as well as mine infrastructure areas. His experience in applied geotechnical engineering projects ranges from dams, foundation engineering, excavations, tunnels and Mine Residue Facilities. His expertise is in infrastructure design, numerical modelling, soil-structure interaction and instrumentation, as well as project management. More recently, Pierre became instrumentally involved in mine closure planning, rehabilitation and mine closure risk assessments.
Pierre published 22 publications (of which he co-authored 18) ranging from technical papers, dissertation and articles.
Pierre received the J E Jennings Award for best South African paper published on a Geotechnical subject in 2004.
Pierre is a Fellow of SAICE and a member of SANCOLD.

John Glendinning
Director
John Glendinning graduated with a BSc in 1995 at Rhodes University (Grahamstown). Thereafter, he completed his BSc Honours (Geology) at Rhodes University (1996) and a MSc Environmental Geochemistry at the University of Cape Town in 1997.
He started working at Jones & Wagener in 1997 as a Scientist. He obtained his Pr Sci Nat in 2002.
In 2003, John became an Associate and in 2008 was promoted to Technical Director. In 2011, John was promoted to the Head of the Environmental Sciences and Environmental Management Departments and in 2014, John was promoted to Director and remains in this position to date
John’s involvement in contaminated land assessments ranges from mining, heavy industrial, petrochemical, radioactive and waste disposal sites. It includes soil, surface water and groundwater contamination assessments, as well as evaluating the need for remediation. John has also been involved in the evaluation and implementation of a range of remediation / mitigation measures. John is also actively involved in geochemical and hydrogeological investigations on a diverse range of brownfields and greenfields mining sites.
John has also been called upon as an expert witness in court cases relating to contaminated land assessments.
John is currently a member of SACNASP, SAIEG and IWMSA.

Adriaan Oosthuizen
Director
Adriaan Oosthuizen is the HOD of the Environmental Engineering department and is supported by a team of passionate and highly competent individuals comprising of engineers, a technician, a technologist and a scientist. The group services primarily the mining and industrial sectors, helping their clients develop solutions for mine closure, mine rehabilitation and clean and dirty water separation systems.
Adriaan obtained his BEng in Civil Engineering from the University of Pretoria in 1998. After that, he completed a BEng Honours (Water Resources) at the University of Pretoria in 2003.
He joined Jones & Wagener as a civil engineer, head of department and a technical director in the Environmental Engineering department in 2011. In 2015 Adriaan was promoted to Director (Alternate) and promoted to Director in February 2022.
Adriaan’s involvement in mine closure and rehabilitation projects include determining financial provisions for closure, opencast pit and dump rehabilitation designs, and detailed environmental risk assessments. His involvement in developing clean and dirty water separation systems includes clean and dirty stormwater canals, pollution control dams, pump stations, and pipelines. In addition, Adriaan has extensive engineering and project management experience in the various project phases ranging from conceptual designs through to construction supervision and management.
Adriaan’s team at Jones & Wagener was awarded the IAIAsa award for “Predictive Rehabilitation Designs” in 2013.
Adriaan has published five conference papers related to Mine Closure and Rehabilitation, of which he co-authored two. He has also presented these at various local and international conferences.
He is a Registered Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), a member of SAICE and a member of the Land Rehabilitation Society of Southern Africa (LaRSSA).

Jabulile Msiza
Chairman
Jabulile Msiza graduated with a B Eng (Civil) in 2005 at the University of Pretoria. She started working at Jones & Wagener in 2005 as a geotechnical engineer in the Waste Department (she was Jones & Wagener’s first bursary student).
She completed her B Eng Honours (Geotechnical) at the University of Pretoria in 2008 and a B Eng Honours (Environmental Engineering) also at the University of Pretoria in 2009. She continued to complete her MBA at the Henley Business School in 2018.
In 2013, Jabulile was promoted to Associate, followed by Technical Director in 2016. In 2019, she became a Director at Jones & Wagener and the Head of the Waste Department. In February 2022, she was promoted to serve as Jones & Wagener’s Chairman of the Board, the first female and youngest person ever to fulfill this role at Jones & Wagener.
Jabulile’s involvement in geotechnical engineering related projects ranges from general, industrial & hazardous waste facilities planning, design, construction and operations monitoring inputs and management.
Jabulile published ten publications (of which she co-authored 9) ranging from technical papers, dissertation and articles. Most notably is her publication on the specifications of HDPE liners for landfill applications and the performance implications.
Jabulile received the Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) 2017 Young Engineer of the Year award. She was a finalist for the Young Professional of the Year in the Built Environment in 2017 by the South African Professional Services Awards (SAPSA). In 2020, Jabulile received the Kelley Nicole Legge trophy in honour of Excellence and Dedication to the Geosynthetics Society by the South African Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society - GIGSA.
Jabulile is a current member of SAICE, ECSA, GIGSA and IWMSA. She also serves on the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) as an elected council member, the IGS TC-B (Technical Committee on Barriers) as Vice-Chair and chairs the African regional activities for the IGS.

Trevor Green
Director
Trevor Green graduated with a BSc (Eng) in 2002 from the University of Witwatersrand. He started his career at Grinaker-LTA and joined ARQ Consulting the following year as a geotechnical engineer. While at ARQ, Trevor was privileged to have the opportunity to design foundations for several of the stadiums used for the Soccer World Cup and work extensively on the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link. He was promoted to Associate in 2007, and obtained his PrEng in the same year.
In 2007, Trevor left ARQ to found Verdi Consulting Engineers (Verdicon). Verdicon quickly established itself as one of SA’s leading geotechnical consulting engineering firms and, in 2017, Jones & Wagener purchased Verdicon and appointed Trevor as Head of the Geotechnical Department, where he currently manages a team of world class geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists. Trevor currently is a Director of Jones & Wagener (Pty) Ltd, as well as a Director of Jones & Wagener Ghana and Jones & Wagener International.
Trevor’s key areas of expertise include geotechnical design and investigations, with a particular interest in piling, lateral support, deep basements and retaining structures.
Trevor is a member of SAICE and a professionally registered engineer with ECSA. He is also actively involved in developing the profession through the Geotechnical Division, serving as Chairman in 2016 & 2017. He also presents occasional lectures to post-graduate students at the Universities of Witwatersrand and Cape Town.
