The Founding of Jones & Wagener

In 1966, two visionary civil engineers, Winston Jones and Fritz Wagener, formed a partnership that would lay the foundation for a company that continues to thrive today. What began as a bold venture on 1st November 1966 has evolved into a legacy of excellence spanning nearly six decades.
Winston’s technical brilliance and insatiable curiosity set the standard for engineering excellence, while Fritz’s keen business acumen and ability to connect people established the firm as a leader in the industry. Together, they instilled the core values that continue to define Jones & Wagener to this day.
Over the years, Jones & Wagener has grown into a trusted name in engineering and environmental consulting, built on the vision of its founders and sustained by a team of dedicated professionals committed to innovation, quality, and integrity.
A Defining Moment in Jones & Wagener’s History
In the late 1960s, Fritz Wagener came across a newspaper article announcing the awarding of a major design and construction project to a leading firm. The project required 4,000 hours of design work—an opportunity too significant to overlook. Recognising a potential connection, Fritz noted that one of the company’s directors was a friend of Winston Jones. He saw an opening that could change the course of their young firm.

However, Winston, known for his brilliance and humility, was unlikely to make the call himself. Seizing the moment, Fritz, with his sharp business acumen and instinct for forging relationships, took the initiative and reached out on behalf of Jones & Wagener.
That phone call led to a meeting, which in turn secured the contract—launching a long-standing partnership with Morgan, Gunning & Mitchell (MGM), later known as CMGM.
This pivotal contract not only reinforced Jones & Wagener’s reputation but also set the stage for a landmark achievement: becoming the official designers of the Iscor Newcastle Steelworks, a project that remains a testament to the firm’s engineering excellence and ambition.
The Story Behind Jones & Wagener’s First Invoice
In 1966, Jones & Wagener undertook its very first project, a structural solution for the cantilevered reinforced concrete roof of a Dutch Reformed Church. The project commenced that year and was successfully completed alongside the building’s construction in 1967.
The original invoice for Job Number 1 remains preserved in our offices, a valued piece of Jones & Wagener’s history. However, what truly sets this milestone apart is a small yet significant act of integrity. After the project was completed, it was discovered that the client had overpaid by R200. Staying true to his principles, Winston promptly refunded the excess amount—a gesture that continues to reflect the values at the core of our firm today.
