Environmental Science Department – Hydrogeologist

  • Mid- to Senior level Hydrogeologist

Jones & Wagener is seeking to employ a mid- to senior level hydrogeologist in the Environmental Sciences Department, based in our Rivonia office. The successful candidate will be responsible for limited site work, compiling monitoring reports, numerical modelling and compiling hydrogeological investigation reports in support of engineering designs and water use license applications.


The requirements associated with the position are as follows (mandatory):

  • A minimum of 6 years consulting experience in the mining and industrial sectors
  • Sc. (Hons) in Geology or Engineering Geology as well as B.Sc. (Hons) in Hydrogeology or Environmental and Engineering Geology as a minimum
  • Experience in hydrogeology related site work including borehole profiling, water sampling, geochemical sampling, geophysical survey supervision, drilling supervision, well design, pumping test design and supervision
  • Data collation and interpretation skills
  • Experience in compiling hydrogeological WULA specialist reports and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for greenfields and brownfields projects
  • Experience in groundwater monitoring report compilation
  • Experience with numerical flow and -transport modelling
  • Experience in the compilation of project proposals and tender documents
  • Be based in- or be willing to relocate to Gauteng (Rivonia)
  • Be vaccinated or willing to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Preference to candidates with the following skills and attributes:

  • M.Sc. (preferable)
  • Basic to intermediate numerical flow and transport modelling (FEFLOW and/or MODFLOW)
  • Basic geochemical modelling would be an asset (PHREEQC and/or The Geochemist’s Workbench)
  • Statistical analysis would be an asset (R, SPSS, Matlab)
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of GIS packages (ArcGIS, Global Mapper, Surfer, QGIS)
  • Good critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Good communication skills, fluent in English
  • Dynamic, self-motivated, takes responsibility and ownership of tasks
  • Able to manage time effectively
  • Attention to detail

The main duties associated with the position include the following:

  • Limited hydrogeology related site work
  • Data collation and interpretation
  • Numerical flow and -transport modelling
  • Hydrogeological WULA specialist report compilation and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for greenfields and brownfields projects
  • Groundwater monitoring report compilation
  • Compilation of project proposals and tender documents

Salary package:

Market related salary including company benefits, dependent on individuals experience and qualifications.
