Jones & Wagener Engineering & Environmental Consultants (J&W) has been appointed by Eskom to undertake the Waste Management Licence application and associated Environmental Impact Assessment for the proposed decommissioning or closure of the Asbestos Disposal Facility at the Komati Power Station outside of Middelburg on the R35 road.

A Consultation Basic Assessment Report (CBAR) was made available for your review from 7 June to 10 July 2017 for your review and comments. We would like to thank all who have contributed their comments.

The Final Basic Assessment Report (FBAR) is now available for your review and comments. The FBAR includes comments received from stakeholders, the document has been updated in terms of the public participation activities which were undertaken, but no significant changes were made.

Please submit your comments on the FBAR to Ms Bongani Mabunda, the case officer for the application at the Department of Environmental Affairs before 15 August 2017. You can submit your comments by email as follows:

The following are the next steps in the process:

  • The competent authority, DEA will review the FBAR;
  • Based on the competent authority’s findings, they will decide whether to grant or refuse Environmental Authorisation for the proposed project and will then issue their decision providing reasons for their decision;
  • Stakeholders will be notified of the competent authority’s decision within 12 days of receipt of receiving notification from the DEA;
  • Stakeholders will be informed about the details of the appeal process. Any party may appeal the decision taken by the competent authority.
