Consultation Scoping Report (CSR) available for public review and comment

Kuyasa Mining (Pty) Ltd on behalf of KiPower is applying for an Environmental Authorisation for the proposed construction of the Matla-Glockner Loop-in and Loop-out 400 kV transmission lines. The purpose of these transmission lines will be to connect the proposed Kipower Independent Power Producer (IPP) power plant to the national grid.

 

The following activities are being triggered in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) (Act 107 of 1998) - GNR 983-985 of December 2014 and therefore a Scoping and Environmental Impact Reporting (S&EIR) process will be undertaken:

Activity

Description

GNR. 983 Item 19: The infilling or depositing of any material of more than 5 cubic metres into, or the dredging, excavation, removal or moving of soil, sand, shells, shell grit, pebbles or rock of more than 5 cubic metres from a watercourse.

Pylon footings may be constructed close to watercourses depending on the preferred route.

GNR. 983 Item 30: Any process or activity identified in terms of section 53(1) of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, 2004 (Act No. 10 of 2004).

Critical biodiversity areas may be present within the servitudes of the powerlines.

GNR. 984 Item 9: The development of facilities or infrastructure for the transmission and distribution of electricity with a capacity of 275 kilovolts or more.

Two 400 kV loop-in and loop out transmission lines are proposed to be constructed.

GNR. 985 Item 12: The clearance of an area of 300 square meters or more of vegetation where 75% or more of the vegetation cover constitutes indigenous vegetation.

Vegetation will be cleared within the 400 kV transmission lines’ servitude.


PUBLIC REVIEW OF THE CONSULTATION SCOPING REPORT

The Consultation Scoping Report (CSR) for the abovementioned project will be made available for public review from 1 December 2015 to 20 January 2016 at the following locations:

A stakeholder meeting to discuss the CSR will be held on Wednesday, 13 January 2015 from 15:00 to 17:00 at the boardroom of Delmas Coal North Shaft – please register for the meeting.
