Jones & Wagener was responsible for the design of the dewatering installation for the bulk excavation to allow the construction of the quay walls in the dry. Together with Jasper Muller Associates; J&W undertook an initial trial pump installation to determine aquifer parameters and to develop a calibrated 3D numerical model of seepage regime.
The dewatering installation was designed to intercept (perimeter wells) or cut-off (slurry wall) seepage from outside the excavation and to extract the resident water with wells and surface sumps. The rate of dewatering was crucial to meet dates for quay wall handover on a very tight programme. To date the excavation process has not been held up by dewatering.
