IWWMP Interventions in Witbank

In 2007 Jones & Wagener were appointed to compile a number of Integrated Waste and Water Management Plans (IWWMP’s) for various coal mines in the Witbank Area. These reports included (amongst other things) commitments to the Department of Water Affairs on certain surface water management measures. The respective mines agreed to put in place in order to comply to the guidelines as stipulated in Government Notice 704.

Following the submission of these reports, J&W were requested to do the detailed design and site supervision of these measures, which included:

  • 15km of clean water canals ranging in depths from 1.5m to 6m
  • 30m by 60m silt trap
  • Boreholes into underground workings
  • Upgrading of two existing farm dams
  • Dirty water collection through subsoil drains

The project has recently been completed with J&W handing the site back over to the client. J&W were involved in the complete life cycle of the project; from the study phase were conceptual ideas were discussed, to the construction and implementation.
