Cell 6A at the Holfontein H:H Landfill site was constructed in 2000 with the purpose of initially being utilised as a leachate dam later to be commissioned as a waste disposal cell.
In 2007, Jones & Wagener was appointed by Enviroserv to design and supervise the construction for the commissioning of Cell 6A. Over the years, a significant amount of sludge had settled on the base and this could not be theoretically quantified. Removal of sludge on top of a 2mm HDPE membrane was anticipated to be a delicate exercise. Once all the leachate was removed from the cell, a designated area on an existing disposal cell was lined to receive the sludge.
After a thorough investigation of the integrity of the 2mm HDPE to act as a seal both on the side slopes and the basin, a new 2mm HDPE geomembrane was installed on the basin. Protection layers were then placed followed by the installation of the drainage layer consisting of 53 mm single sized stone and a network of HDPE pipes.
