ATCOM East Project

The Atcom East Project entails the expansion of the existing Xstrata Coal Atcom Colliery by a further 140 million tons, adding some 25-30 years to the Life of Mine. Jones & Wagener are involved with the design and construction supervision of bulk earthworks and civil infrastructure comprising:

  • Haul roads 
  • Hard park and workshop facilities 
  • New run-of-mine tip 
  • Earthworks for coal transfer conveyors 
  • 2 x haul road bridges over the Steenkoolspruit and Olifants river 
  • Surface water canals 
  • Pollution control dams 
  • Discard dump extension 
  • Stockpile areas 
  • Service roads 
  • Etc. 

The conceptual design phase commenced in 2008 and the project is due for completion early 2011. J&W has been involved as part of the Project Team with the initial conceptual planning, pre-feasibility and feasibility design, detailed design and tendering, and construction supervision.
